Tony serves up training first!

A New Forest restaurant and guest house owner has become the first employer in England to be awarded a new qualification for customer service excellence.  Tony Barnfield, chef and proprietor of The Nurse’s Cottage in Sway, has underlined his commitment to training and developing staff over the past 15 years with his own national landmark.

He was awarded the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Customer Service for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism, having completed all five Welcome to Excellence training courses and undergone a rigorous assessment.

The Nurse’s Cottage has won a string of regional and national awards as a tourism business and has been equally lauded for its outstanding staff training record.  More than 90 staff – including many part-time young people working just a couple of hours a week – have undertaken the Welcome Host course over the years.

Tony Barnfield said: “Sending young people on a nationally-recognised training course is both motivational and makes it clear that we expect them to make a real contribution.  It’s all helping to give them a proper understanding of the world of work, and to prepare them for the future whether they go on to university, to work in our sector or do something very different.”
