RSPB Leighton Moss

Leighton Moss was established in 1964 and is the largest reedbed in north-west England, and home to some really special birds such as breeding bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers. Visitors can choose from a selection of trails and hides, most of which are suitable for wheelchairs, and get right to the heart of the reedbed. Or they can take the nature trail alongside two coastal lagoons to see lots of wading and water birds.

Staff and volunteers from RSPB Leighton Moss have attended a number of Welcome to Morecambe Bay courses.

Anya Kuliszewski, Visitor Experience Intern, tells us about her recent experience as a delegate:

"We wanted to improve the quality of customer service as a first point of contact on reception or in the cafe and to learn more about how we fit into Morecambe Bay as a visitor destination. We all really enjoyed the course, found it very helpful and liked many of the activities. The tutor was excellent and made sure that we were never bored.

The training has made us look at the importance of feedback as well as the importance of advertising the Morecambe Bay area. We are now looking at developing a folder that has information about Morecambe Bay attractions in it that staff can use when talking to visitors.

We not only looked at how we should interact with customers but also the other staff and volunteers that we work with. We also feel more confident when dealing with difficult customers as we were given tools to tackle them successfully.

Staff and volunteers had a brilliant time and learned skills that will help them with their customer service in the future. The tutor was excellent and gave us lots of ideas for things we can easily implement at RSPB Leighton Moss in the future."
